10 Reasons I'm Obsessed With These Road Cycling Shoes (And You Might Be Too)

By Matthew Perrone | June 2nd, 2025 | 11:23 am ET

Numb toes at mile 30. Burning hotspots on century rides. Heel slip that makes you question every pedal stroke.

For most cyclists, these aren't occasional annoyances — they're just "part of cycling." I accepted them for years. Tried different insoles, adjusted my cleats a hundred times, loosened and tightened straps mid-ride. Nothing worked consistently.

Then I tested a pair of PACE Bikes road shoes, and here's what I discovered: those problems aren't inevitable. They're design failures that most shoes simply ignore.

After 1,200 miles in three months across everything from sprint intervals to gran fondos, here are the 10 things that make these shoes different.

1. The Toe Box Actually Has Space For Your Toes

Let's start with the obvious one: numb toes. I've dealt with this for years. Tried different insoles, moved my cleats back, loosened my straps. Nothing worked consistently.

The toe box on these shoes is shaped differently. Instead of narrowing to a point, it follows the natural spread of your forefoot. Your toes have room to exist without being squeezed together like sardines.

2. Stiff Enough For Racing, Comfortable Enough For Centuries

The sole delivers serious stiffness without the harsh ride of pure carbon. When I'm sprinting out of corners or grinding up steep climbs, there's zero energy wasted to sole flex.

I ride with a power meter, and I can't detect any power loss compared to my previous carbon-soled shoes.

I've done everything from sprint intervals to 120-mile gran fondos in these. They handle both equally well.

3. They Actually Stay On Your Heel

Heel slip drives me crazy. That sensation of your heel lifting slightly with every pedal stroke, especially when climbing out of the saddle.

The heel cup on these locks your heel in place using geometry, not compression. Combined with the precision dial closure, I can fine-tune fit while riding — loosening slightly on long climbs when my feet swell, tightening for sprints — all without taking my hand off the bars or pulling over.

4. My Feet Don't Cook On Summer Rides

The mesh panels on the top and sides move air through the shoe, not just around it. The upper material itself wicks sweat away instead of trapping it against your skin. After a hard effort, my feet feel warm but not swampy.

This makes a bigger difference than you'd think. Comfortable feet mean you can focus on the ride instead of constantly being aware of how gross your feet feel.

5. Surprisingly Light (Without Feeling Fragile)

I've put 1,200+ miles on mine in three months, including some gravel roads I probably shouldn't have been riding on. Minimal signs of wear. The construction is solid where it needs to be, with weight saved in areas that don't affect durability.

On the bike, you notice it immediately — or rather, you don't notice the shoes at all. They disappear on your feet.

6. The Fit Works For Normal Human Feet

I have slightly wide feet with high arches. Finding shoes that fit properly usually means ordering "wide" versions and hoping for the best. Sometimes they work, sometimes they're just less terrible than standard widths.

I ordered these in my normal size (12) expecting to return them and size up. They fit perfectly right out of the box. No break-in period where I had to suffer through painful rides. No sizing up to accommodate width (which always causes heel slip). Just immediate, comfortable fit from ride one.

7. Built to Last, Not Replace Every Season

After 1,200 miles in three months, I started looking for signs of wear. Here's what I found: nothing.

The stitching is still perfect — no loose threads or separation at stress points. The heel counter hasn't collapsed or softened. The sole bonding is solid with no creaking or separation. The precision dials still click smoothly with no play. The upper material shows zero scuffing or cracking.

8. They Work With Everything (Yes, Even Peloton)

These work with every standard road pedal system: Look Keo, Shimano SPD-SL, and Look Delta. If you're a Peloton rider tired of paying $125 for their branded shoes, these are exactly what you need. They clip in smoothly and perform just as well.

9. They Look Good

Clean lines, understated design, good color options. They look fast without trying too hard. I get compliments on them regularly, which is weird for cycling shoes but also kind of nice.
